Being afraid to deem a student not yet capable
Assessors have a duty to just sign off a person as performing competently when they’ve. Some assessors are proven to sign off a student as competent when they aren’t due to perceived or actual pressure from the student, the RTO or the employer. It’s very important that all assessors evaluate a pupil based only on the evidence supplied.
Not recording adequate information relating to re-assessment
Many CRICOS consultant are still not providing adequate Information concerning the assessment particularly in regard to reassessment. It’s essential that information is listed on the students file regarding any reassessment actions and the outcome.
It’s not enough for an assessor to make a notice that reassessment was undertaken and the student is currently competent.

Not using the marking guide when creating assessment decisions
Auditors are in many cases asking the marking guide and comparing answers which were deemed capable by assessors with the marking guide. Oftentimes they’re discovering that assessors are marking responses as capable that aren’t adapting to the marking guide.
This implies that the marking guide is not being used, the responses aren’t a true reflection of the right response or the marking guide isn’t flexible enough. The validation of appraisal decisions should identify if this is a problem in your RTO and determine an area requiring improvement.
